METEORA



Meteora constitute, afterwards the Agion Oros, is the bigger monastic total in Greece. Their presence is continuous from the season of installation of first pillar saints up to today. According to the various historical testimonies, the abbeys of Meteora initially were thirty. Only the six of them operate tnowadays and accept crowd of visitors. In the region exist, however, a lot of smaller, abandoned monasteries, too. Most of them were founded in the 14th century.

The name "Meteora" is newer and is not reported by ancient writers. Meteora owe their name in Saint Athanassios the Meteorite, owner of abbey of Metamorphosis of Sotiros (known as Big Meteore, too). Saint Athanassios named thus "wide stone", in 1344 (when he went up him for first time). According to the most valid sources, first monks installed in that region in 12th century. In the means of 14th century, monk Nile assembled those who lived isolated in the caves of rocks. Thus the monasticism in Meteora was organized.


Accessible are the monasteries:

•     The abbey of Ypapantis

•     The abbey of Saint Nikolaos Mpantoba in the place "Kofinia"

•     Doypiani, today temple of Zoodochou Source that founded Nile

•     The abbey of Saint George of Mandila

•     The abbey of Saint Spirit or abbey of Seneschals Michail and Gabriil which is considered that it is the ancienter abbey of Meteores


The 6 monasteries that operate nowadays are:

•     The male abbey of Saint Nikolaos of Asmenos or Anapaysa (1150)

•     The abbey of Roysanoy or Arsani (1288)

•     The male abbey of Metamorphosis of Savior, "Big Meteore" that is built on to the bigger rock that is named "Wide Stone". In Big Meteore, it is also found askitario Saint Athanassios of Meteorite

•     The abbey of Saints Panton or Barlaam that is the second in size abbey of Meteora (1350)

•     The abbey of Saint Trinity that was founded by Dometio in 1438

•     The femine abbey of Saint Stefanos

 

Meteora, apart from an important monument of Orthodoxy, constitutes also a unique in beauty geological phenomenon. The single rocks reach in height until 400 metres. It' worths to be mentioned that they are recognized as preservable and protected monument of humanity from the UNESCO and other international organizations.
